#1 is a bit over-contrasty. You have some blocked areas. #2 is too soft!

I think they both work, but prefer 1. I don't mind the space, I think it adds to the isolation of the tree. And the detail is there in the grass so the large foreground works too.

No. 2 for me. I like the strips of light a lot, and what could've been blank space to right holds interest due to that thick, heavy cloud formation.

Excellent composition, the second shot really does it for me though. Most effective as a mono, a colour version just wouldn't have the same impact!

Definately inspired to get out into deep countryside myself!!
