Long lens choices

Further to my recent post I'm off to Uganda later in the year and am after a decent long lens.

I've been looking at the Sigma 120-400mm but I've been offered at a comparable price a Canon 35-350mm L lens. The Sigma has a longer reach but I wonder if the image quality might be a little better with the Canon. Does anyone have any suggestions about which might be the better option? Or would I be better off saving a little longer and get the Canon 100-400mm?

Well I have the Sigma and its pretty good. No major flaws but for wildlife I really miss a focus limiter. The 100-400 has one I think.
The 35-350 would be a good option if you just want to take 1 lens with you.
 
Excuse my ignorance but what is a focus limiter? I've manged thus far without it so I guess I can cope a bit longer still :)

I think I'm leaning more towards the 150-500 as it'll be an improvement over my current setup but still not break the bank. Although, if I find a good priced used 100-400.... Would I miss the last 100mm if I went for the canon? I've seen some good shots on here taken at 500mm but also heard it can be a bit soft too.
 
Personally, i'd go with the Canon 100-400L lens. It's a cracking lens!!:thumbs:

In the case of the 100-400, the focus limiter increases the minimum focusing distance (if I recall correctly, from 1.8m to 6.5m). By reducing the size of the range it scans, it can focus quicker.

For safari I'd go with the 100-400. Focal length is OK if you're not after small birds. If you can find one second-hand then you'll probably be able tosell it afterwards for little, or no, loss (if you can bear to part with it).
