Long lens monopod head?

Just acquired a Nikon 200-400mm - wondering about recommendations for a monopod head? I don't want a ball head but something strong enough to support the weight of this lens?
 
That looks good - how does the lens fix to it - does it use a Kirk/Arca style plate - or screw on?
 
Yep ............ screw plate to lens foot, stick on head ..... slide up or down to get lens/camera in balance, tighten screw ................ off you go ..... simples
 
Hi mate glad you got your lens :thumbs: i used mine on a manfretto 486 rc2 with a quick release plate.... more than man enough to cope with weight. Gives you the freedom to lock out completely, lock out to a point that you can still move the lens for adjustment if necessary. I tended to use two options with this lens, a reasonably loose lock down with VR if needed but VR off if lens locked down completely.

Decent heads for a monopod and a long lens are a real pain. Ballheads are just too wobbly. Gimbals and similar are too bulky and, while OK for two-dimensional shooting (like sports), connecting direct to the pod is no good for things like aircraft or birds.

What's needed is a decent tilt head. Unfortunately there are only three choices. There's the Manfrotto 234RC2, which is useless for big lenses as it droops horribly. The other two are excellent monopod heads. But both the Acratech Long Lens Head and the Really Right Stuff High Capacity Monopod Head (my preferred option) are extremely expensive.
 
Thanks for the advice - I use a Acrotech GV2 on my tripod - so I know the quality - money is not the first consideration - useability and security is. thanks!

EDIT: who sells RRS in the UK??

I couldn't find a UK supplier so I bought my RRS monopod head from the US. Cost around £250 with delivery and VAT.
