Long lenses for sports

Hi there,

New here and i've been lurking for a while. I'm Tom and i work mainly around sport photography, question today is:

What is a longer lens (anywhere to 300mm) that can be used well for sports/filming?

I bought a 50mm f1.8 and the quality of the photo's i've found is awesome, something like this would be great.


Anyone that has a samyang 8mm canon mounted lens too that i can purchase would be great.

Hi Tom,

Your budget is going to be a primary factor here!!
Also what sports are you shooting? I.e. indoors / outdoors, are the subjects moving, do you need a zoom or can you zoom with your feet and so on!
 
Yeah budget wise, erm i sound like a tight-ass but cheap as possible. I've seen tamrons for silly cheap brand new (£80) but i don't fully trust them.

Mainly outdoors, hence why i use the 50mm.

I mainly shoot BMX and skating, seeing as all my friends along with myself ride.

If you're on a budget I've always found the sigma 70-300 lenses to be good, these can be picked up for anywhere between £50 and £100
You can get the Nikon one for a similar price but I have never used these!

The 55-200vr could also be a good cheap option!
 
if you want the same quality as your 50mm at 300mm then you will need a canon 300mm 2.8L currently around 3.8k new.. can pick up for 2.8k on ebay..

Thats the answer to your question..

However I have a funny feeling the goalposts are going to get moved in a minute :)

mmm Yeah, i've about 4k to blow on it so you've gotta buy the best! I'm kidding, honestly.
But yeah i think i'll pass on paying that, it's silly prices.

70-200mm f4 would be a good choice if you're shooting mainly outdoor sports.
Shooting BMX and skating you probably won't need IS.
I'm learning to shoot wakeboarding, BMX and capoeira, and it's a pretty good length for them. The Canon shooter at my wakeboarding club uses the f4 and the images were pretty sweet.

Yeah i was thinking that too, i use it for filming too so i'll see what it's like. I find my 50mm non IS shakes something chronic, whereas my 18-55 provides a smoother video, much easier to do moving shots with.

there you go.. I answered your question honestly.. then you move the goalposts.. you will NOT get the same quality as your 50mm on a 300 with sigma or any other make.. you wont get a good sports lens at 300mm for less than 1k and even then it will be an old non supported lens at that price.

be careful of lens such as the 70-300 yes its cheap.. but theres a reason for that and its only use is on a nice day :)

Oh with that information and your budget, it's easy.
70-200mm f4 iS or f2.8 IS I or II. ;)
I'd get the 2.8 I used as it allows you to shoot in the evenings and seperates the background nicely (and don't need to sell a kid). The wakeboarding shots on my flickr were taken with the Nikon equivalent, if you're looking for what it can do.
