Could anyone tell me what I would need to do a long term stop motion photography project, i'm renovating a pickup truck into a hot rod and I want to record my progress in this form.

I was thinking about mounting a camera in my garage, would I need a PC or something linked to it?

So what do I need equipment wise, i'm pretty clueless btw

I get what you're saying but this is going to take months possibly even years to finish, so I want to get some way of documenting it rigged up and i'm not sure what to buy or even where to start...

You could possibly set up a cheap tripod, secure it in place and super glue all the joints together so its not going to move an inch - then just pop the camera on and take your shot at whatever interval your planning.

You wouldn't really need it linked to a computer, you could set the camera up then leave it exactly in the same place taking pictures as you go - then once the memory card fills up just take the card out, upload all the pictures to the PC and delete them off the card.

I do actually have a nikon d80 but it's not suitable as I want to fix the camera in place and leave it there

You could always set up a webcam - with a few USB extensions going all the way back to your computer in the office. As its going to be a documentation video it doesn't really need to be in 10mp DSLR quality.

Hmm I could do but I was hoping I could set it up so it takes a photo every 24 hours from a high vantage point, having the camera at ground level means it is inevitably going to be knocked over/get in the way too.

hmm that sounds more like it, how do I set it up/what software do I use so it takes a photo every 24 hours or what ever?

It depends how much you're willing to spend on it I guess? The best option would be a cheap slr, get one a few years old and a kit lens, probably £200 or something. Then get a tripod, set it all up, and get a remote release. Set it up, and don't move it! That way you can take shots, then just take the memory card out and download the photos to your computer. The put the card back in, take the next few shots, etc etc. So:

Camera
Tripod
Remote Release
Memory card
Patience.

Sound do-able? Or are you after a solution using your current camera?

Chris

I would prefer the idea jack had since I can mount a webcam high and i've got an old pc knocking around that I could just leave on taking photos automatically on a timer for me as I go, of course that relies on some sort of macro software to achieve the desired result?

200 spondoolies is no problem though...
