Longer camera straps

Ok so a little mundane for a post, but I need to carry the camera (just a standard lens, Flashgun on top usually) safely so it can't drop. My current strap allows me to carry it over one shoulder, but it slips and can easily fall.

I would prefer to carry it on a strap over my head so it hangs across the body and can be tucked to my side/rear when out of use. (Current strap not long enough to do this and allow camera to easily move to face to take picture).

I've seen some that attach to the tripod mount, but does anoyone use one and just how safe are they.

Are there any other options?
 
I have the Sniper strap (over the shoulder strap) and would never go back to anything else.

They're very good - I used one for a month out here after a mate in the USA kindly sent me one. I found it very good for my D3 with 70-200 attached. Though I found it took at least a week before I could bring myself to stop reaching down to tighten it up a little more 'just in case'...

I went back to the standard Nikon straps out here (also kindly donated by a member here), as it's easier for me to attach both cameras to carabiners so they don't fall off.
If you carry a Photo back-pack, that might also be a possibility - attach small carabiners to the shoulder-straps of the back-pack. No danger of them falling off the shoulders then.

Another option would be to cannibalise an Op-Tech strap and make longer lower straps from purchased webbing material...
 
Kata Reflex-e (KT A91E).
It can extend to a max. length of 57" (trim it to what suits you or tuck the slack in).
I got one at the turn of the year. I like to carry my camera bandolier fashion with it at my hip. That gives enough slack to lift it up for shooting.

I have the Op-Tech strap at the moment, if a little worn now, I have been thinking about extending it as you suggest.

Looks OK to me - apart from the carabiner-part - that looks a bit cobby compared to the US Import that I have, but it's probably more than adequate to hold the weight of a D3 and 70-200...

I'm a fan of these things - after I stop wearing body-armour on jobs i'll be using mine a lot...
 
Upstrap do a longer strap that goesacross the body (or they used to do one).

The other ones that go across the body are the blackrapid straps.

Thanks - I couldn't for the life of me remember what it was called - it's sat in my AWOL bag in an ISO container waiting for me to grab it and run for the Freedom-Bird on Friday...

I've seen these already, priccy though.

How secure is the screw fixing ? and it would preclude the use of a tripod, but no major loss as I rarely use one.
 
i have the black rapid strap (rs-5 i think), the screw fixing has never come loose but is always easy to undo. Only takes a few seconds to undo if you want to mount to a tripod.
 
Very secure - I wasn't initially convinced either, but the rubber grommet effectively locks the screw in place.
I used mine on the 70-200's tripod socket and it balanced nicely - not sure it would work as well using the camera's tripod socket...

I've got a pair of Blackrapid straps and the little joiner thingy. One camera with a 70-200 and another with a 24-70. The one with the 70-200 is mounted using the threaded hole on the tripod foot. The one with the 24-70 is mounted using the tripod socket on the camera. It's as secure as anything.

OK, thinking about it, I imagine that, when Arkady said that he was not so sure about it working so well using the camera's tripod socket, he was referrring to a camera with a 70-200 mounted.

Sort of...maybe with a small prime, but most of my lenses are a wee bit...heavy...
I tried it with the 24-70 on and it seemed a bit unbalanced...it still worked perfectly though - no question about that...
I'm definitely going to use it on the body with the 70-200 mounted but I'll keep the other camera with the 17-35 on an Op-Tech 'bouncy' strap...
 
Just sent for a papstrap after reading about them.
I want it for a second camera on my other side.
At the moment got a strechy jessops one on the D300.

But want a webbing one for under the strechy one so they won't tie each other up ,if that makes sense.
probably have a 10-20 on it so balance should be ok as the body is only a D70s.
