Hello

I have been shooting some birds and cannot seem to get close enough, and want to try another lens, maybe a bit longer.

I currently have a sigma 100-300 but isn't sharp at all and slow at 300

I also am using a minolta 70-210 beercan, this is sharp but lacks length

anything i can do to get a bit longer :)

hi max
with the sort of distances you will be shooting birds at,you will need to be shooting at f5.6 minimum,so i wouldn't be worried about using f2.8 lens,just ramp up the ISO to get a decent enough shutter speed.

i can highly recommend the sony 70-400 F4-5.6 G SSM lens,and although not cheap,certainly is about the best in it's class,and works well with a 1.4x teleconverter.i believe the sigma 50-500 comes highly regarded also,but i have no experience of this lens...

You're going to have to spend some serious money for the better options. On the cheap side, used, which is relative, there is the Tamron 200-400 LD (push pull design = dust magnet. Not the sharpest but actually not bad with some PP sharpening. Heavy), the Sigma 400 APO Macro (bit sharper than the Tamron 200-400. heavy. may or may not be problems on a Sony body.. mileage varies) and the Minolta 100-400 APO (most expensive of the lot but lighter and decent output, not stellar but good).
 
budget?
at 400mm the 70-400G SSM is about as good as it gets & very flexible but it's £1000+ new, ~£900 s/h.
Tamron 200-500 & Sigma -500 zooms are cheaper options but afaik are no sharper @500 than cropping into the 70-400.
 
I may consider selling the Sigma but would like to try it myself first, if you're interested let me know and I'll pull my finger out and give it a go.
