Has anyone been to Longleat recently just wondered what it was like as never been and hoping to go very very soon.

Thanks.

I went a few months ago, was fantastic. I went early in the morning and didnt leave until late evening.
So much to see there... i shall be going again soon with the camera for sure.

Went a couple of years ago, it was great. Photography wise the 'roads' tend to wind through the 'reserves' so you have to watch for cars etc in the background.

You are not meant to open your windows in the Lion \ Tiger enclosures so have to take pictures through car glass.

Animals have loads of space to wander around which is nice.

I'd try and get there as early as poss as it does get busy and you can queue in the car to 'park' by the lions for example. Ideally you might also time a visit to the tiger enclosure with feeding time, we saw them fighting over food which was good to see.

You'll have a great day if you go, I think you can loop round as many times as you like.

I took this at Longleat in 2008. I think its better to go on a cooler day as on hot days the animals just sit and bask.

The animals are so tame, point your camera and they smile at you :)

Better to go when its quiet (kids at school) if you go in with your car you have to keep to the road apart from feeding the deer.
The safari bus (not the double decker) will drive right up to the animals for some good shots.
No monkeys at the moment so safe to take the car in

I would also watch out for the monkeys, ripping trim, aerials and wipers etc off your car. You may want to go in one of their vehicles.

I went last month, it was a great day out, just remember in the safari park you are shooting through glass most of the time. It's only the first enclosure where you can wind windows down.

Oh and still no monkeys!

The monkeys were quarantined as they had the simian herpes virus which often doesn't cause them any symptoms, but can be fatal to humans. The troop at Woburn were euthanised because of it, this could also have been the case at Longleat.

I have also been told that at Longleat you can only drive through the safari once, so therefore cant take advantage of lighting and animal activity, making it pot luck. Maybe someone could confirm if this is the case?

This months practical photograpy has a feature on shooting zoo animals in this months edition. the shots in it were taken at Whipsnade which is still one of my favourite places to shoot animals (in the photographic sense only!)
