Looking at a Nifty.....

Yes
Afternoon all,

Recently I've been practicing using my 18-70 at 50mm. The largest aperture at this range on this lens is f4.5 and based on the type of shots I seem to be taking I think the jump from 4.5 to 1.8 would be incredibly beneficial.

Also, there's the added benefit of nice creamy bokeh which I think I could definitely use in my pictures.

As said in another thread, I have tried using my Tamron 90mm as a portrait lens but it just doesn't work (for me anyway). I take it they will auto-focus on the D40x providing I get the AF-S one?

I know their called Nifty Fifties for a reason, I guess I'm just after some reassurance (and also to see if anyone has one for sale :naughty:)

Cheers

Dave

The newer f1.4 50mm will auto focus, the 50mm f1.8 will not.

The other option is the 35 f1.8, that will auto focus on the D40, although may be a bit short for your purpose.

Thank you for the reply.

Yes, the 35mm will be too short I expect. Out of the two I'd rather try the 50 first.

So it's the 1.4 if I want auto-focus (which I could really do with). I guess I'll make a wanted thread... :)

Thanks again

If it is any help when I had a D40x I used to use a Sigma 17-70, which was F2.8 wide open, decent lens, you should pick one up 2nd hand on the FS listing.

Oh and it with AF on the D40x if you get the HSM version.

Your welcome

Nikon AF-S 50mm f1.4 G is the new one that will AF on your D40

Nice lens, toyed with getting one to add to my collection :whistling:, I do like the f1.8 on my D300, needs to get more use really.

Thank you for the recommendation, certainly something to consider.

I'd ideally like to replace my 18-70 with something eventually. I've heard plenty of things about the Sigma so perhaps this is the way to go.... having looked at the prices of the 50 f1.4 I'm not so sure...

See I could do with the 1.8 but it wouldn't auto-focus. However, it would on a D90......:naughty:

I think you will get a Sigma for £150.

If you want bokeh you could also consider a 55-200 VR which you will get even cheaper and would also give you a long zoom, albeit its not 2.8.

Having tried the 70-300 VR, it wasn't for me. I simply didn't use it. Shorter range is the way forward for me and I'd rather spend the money on a nice fast lens.

The Sigma sounds like a good idea, I could sell my 18-70 DX also. However I'd probably still want a 50.....

The Sigma 50mm f1.4 is £360, the Nikkor 50mm f1.4 is £260, I prefer the images from the Nikkor.

I didn't realise the Sigma 17-70 was 2.8-4.5. I'd prefer something that was 2.8 constant, I realise I'll pay more for this. So, I have 2 options as I see it:

- Nifty Fifty 1.4G and still use the 18-70 which I'm very happy with so far.
- Sell the 18-70 and get a Sigma 18-50 f2.8 (and probably still want a 50mm...)

No brainer to me I think.

Keep 18 - 70 which I would rather have than any Sigma lens (but I had an expensive lemon once, so am biased :D) and get 50 f1.4 Nikkor

Go for it. If you dont like it you can always sell it. I sold one a couple of weeks ago for £250.

This was took with my 55-200vr , technically not the best photo but in the right hands this lens could get good results , obviously mine aren't the right hands
