Looking for a 70-200mm, but what one?

Yes
I'll start by stating that I can't afford the Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS, my options would be....

Canon 70-200L f4 IS

Canon 70-200L f2.8

Sigma 70-200 f2.8

I will be using it for weddings and live music events, and would be looking at getting the extender for using it for football and rugby.

I realise the one I can't afford is the best, but what would be the best of the rest?

I can get the Sigma and the extender for the price of the other 2, but would using the lens on my 40d as opposed to the 5DmkII have a similar effect with the crop sensor?

Thanks for any info

Dave

i would go for either one of the 2.8's for gig photography, not had any exp with the canon as im a nikon user, but i have the siggy 70-200 and find it very good, was shooting some ducks in my local pond on a dark cloudy day around 3.30 so light was very poor and my pics came out very sharp through out the range

For live music events I would opt for one of the f/2.8s. Haven't any experience of either to recommend one over the other though.

Cheers Scarecrow!

That's my thoughts as well!

Just need to decide between the Canon and the Sigma now!

Dave, i have the sigma on a Sony fit, and really like it! Fast AF, tracks MX bikes fine, and suits me tbh. All my MX images that have been on here are taken with it. If you wish, i could try sort out a 100% crop for you to see! and you are more than welcome to check mines, see what you think(only prob it bein a sony fit!)

Thanks for all the information.

I'll need to make a decision soon!

70-200L 4 IS. If you need f/2.8, wait and save up for the IS version. I think you will regret it if you don't.

You have not skimped on the rest of your kit (I assume the Tamron is going ;) ).

40D crop factor is 1.6x. Extenders are either 1.4x (usually works okay) or 2x (usually doesn't).

If you dont mind the weight, then Canon 70-200L f2.8 is ideal for the types of pictures you are taking. Its excellent under low light conditions and fast sports.

Get the 2.8 version, and save up for the IS version...no point in stopping 1/3rd of the way at the same price to get something that is less functional for shooting live music and weddings... all too often I pine over anything faster than f2.8...get it and save up for the IS version if you then feel you need it, don't get the f4 IS, it's a good lens yes, but just not for low light.

'Stopping off' with the canon will mean you don't spend money on teleconverters for the sigma that then need to get replaced with the canon ones, too.
