Hi all,

Id like to pick your knowledgable brains if thats ok?! Im after a replacement for my Sony A450's kit lens (SAL 1855) and would like to know which way you would go? Bit of info first, id like it to be as wide as the 1855 as i love shooting landscapes but im not after a prime (mainly because of budget) Ive got a minolta 35-70 f4 already but will be selling both lenses to buy a better single lens. Im not bothered about age in the slightest so minolta would be an option but ive only been shooting about 5 months so im too clued up on decent lenses atm, ive had a little look on dyxum but would prefer other input. My budget will prob be about £100 so id almost certainly be looking on the second hand market. Ive got a few 55mm screw in filters aswell so itd be nice if i didnt have to change them for diferent thread sizes but im not too bothered if i do actually have to.

Thanks in advance :)

Si

What is the rationale behind getting a new lens? £100 is rather limiting and the 18-55 is 'ok' as a walk about lens.

Try some old Minolta Glass,
I got an old 35-105 (with macro) to fill the gap between saving up for a
tamron 17-50mm.

Yeah but it's amazing and worth saving up for :D Mine was 250 quid from a member on here and for that price it's an absolute steal.

With a budget of £100 you might as well keep the 18-55 until you can afford more. Then Sony 16-105 or Zeiss 16-80. The Tamron 17-50 has its fans, but I've not used one to be able to comment.

well, the 16-105 does sound appealing, think ill save for one of them (at least until i find another lens i want lol, the eternal want for new shiny stuff :D )

Thanks all :)

Personally I have heard good things about the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 HSM...

Still over your budget, but cheaper than the 16-105 and faster! I know its only 2.8 when at the wide end, but even f4 at 70mm is better than the kit lens (and the 16-105) although the 16-105 obviously has more at the long end.

alternatively, everybody seems to rate the Tamron 18-55mm f2.8.. fast at all lengths and I hear its pin sharp.

Both of these are currently about 320-350 new... the 16-105 is over £100 more.

Tamron 17-50/f2.8 or the Sony 16-80mm

The Tam is a little soft at f2.8 (but fine/good), but v good from f4. The Sony is probably the sharper of the two lenses, is wider and longer, but slower.

Can't comment on the S 16-105, but owned both of the above when I had an a700.

oh ! I would take your mini beercan as a part exchange for my sigma 18-55 f2.8 but it would still be lot more than 100 quid.

+1 for the metal bodied 35-105, there is one on Ebay fro £100 at the moment. If you search around for old Minolta film cameras you will occasionally find one cheaper than that.

It was my most used lens when I had an a200. It also gets a better user score on Dyxum than the Beercan or mini Beercan.
