Looking for a Lens Reccomendation for D90 (18-55 ish focal length)

Hi All,

I'm looking for a recommendation for a lens to replace a Nikon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 (the D3000 Kit lens). I might be selling my D3000 and Kit lens as I have suddenly been very fortunate to be given a D90 which looking at the specs is much better than my D3000.

I am told that one of the benefits to the D90 is that it can use older/classic lenses with full functionality which, if one is lucky can pick some high quality lenses a little cheaper that then brand new specs. So, if I sell the 18-55, do you have any recommendations to replace the focal range with a different and better lens.

I currently have the following lenses (all Nikon).

35mm F1.8
50mm f1.8D (comes with the D90)
18-55mm f3.5/5.5 (one looking to replace)
50-200mm f4

Obviously budget will be a constraint, the 17-55 f2.8 looks great but at £1000 is way over my budget.

I am just looking for some suggestions at present then I can check the web for some prices.

For a constant 2.8 maximum aperture in the same range, I'd forego the Nikon 17-55mm and opt for the Tamron 17-50mm (preferably a second hand one without the built-in motor as it focuses faster). Just as good optically and a lot smaller & lighter, all though the build quality isn't anywhere near as good.

A16NII has the motor, A16N doesn't. Not sure if this appears on the lens itself, but just check the mounting flange for the bit where the focus drive screw mates (looks like a slotted screw head). They are a lot easier to find with the motor, not so easy to find ones without.
 
Were you happy with the 18-55? if so, how about the Nikon 18-70, 18-105 VR, or a bit better with the 16-85 VR? What price range are you looking at? You've mentioned the 17-55 is out of budget, but what's the limit?

I think my budget would be up to about £500 max. I am happy with the 18-55 but will sell it if a) it needs to be sold (buyers opinion) with the D3000 as a kit, b) I can pick up a lens that will be of equal to better quality & have a fast aperture, i.e, 2.8. As the D90 opens up the range (not just AF-G) and non motorised lenses I have a wider selection to check out.

I have never tested any of the Sigma, Tamron, or Tokina lenses in comparison to the Nikon's, but I have read good things on the Tonkina. So I am gauging peoples views on a replacement for the 18-55 if it is a better lens up to around £500.
