Looking for a long lens

Hi guys,

I currently have a sigma 10-20 and a canon 17-55, however, I am looking for a longer lens to add to my collection.

I have maybe £500 to spend, and I have been looking at the 70-200 F4, however, I wonder if this would be long enough at times?

Ideally I would like a longer lens for some wildlife, aviation and transportation and also for candids.

Do you guys think that this would be a good choice or should I be looking at something else?

What about the Sigma 70-200 2.8?

Also, I have been offered a Sigma 100-300 F4 EX for £400?

i got the canon 70-200 f4 and a 1.4x extender, its a great setup but may be slightly more than you have to spend unless you find a couple of second hand bargains
 
I have the 70-200 f4 and whilst it is fine, in most cases, for aviation it is to short in my opinion for wildlife. It is a good lens but will probably annoy you as it is just not quite long enough.

That's exactly what I ended up doing, bought it for aviation and I am planning to spend a day at the end of Conningsby runway next week, it weighs a ton though
 
I'm not sure if a 100-400 would be practical to walk around with?

Also, a lot of people have suggested the tamron 70-300 usd lens, which can be had new for £370. Any opinions on this?
 
What will you be shooting? I find 200mm fine on full frame for most of what I shoot, but if you want to do aviation or wildlife photography it might be a bit short.

The 70-200f4L is a great lens though.
 
I like to shoot a lot of things, but this lens would mainly be for wildlife and transportation stuff. Racing, aviation etc.
 
I have the Canon 70-300 "DO" lens which is very "carryable" but too much unless second hand?

Main point is that I find the 300 end, even on a crop sensor (7D), is not long enough for birds - and they won't come any closer or just fly away if I try to get closer to them !!! OK for other things - candid etc.

They are nice and sharp, though at 1/320 any reasonably skilled photographer should be able to handhold even at that long a focal length.

As it's 1/320 shutter on 600mm? I would disagree with the above statement. For hand held you should be looking for a shutter speed around the focul.. not half and hand held surely? Its possible but I disagree that its not hard :)

I was thinking of upgrading from a canon 70-200L F4 to the 100-400. Is it really that much heavier?
 
Double the weight at a hefty 1.5kg, plus as a pull zoom length increases and moves centre of gravity beyond camera. Takes a little getting used to I am toying in getting the grip for the 7d to provide some balance.
