I am now looking for a quick lens to use on my D800e.
Thinking of the 85mm 1.4 - (don't want or use a 35 - or 50mm).

Is the Nikon AF-S so much better than the Sigma or the old AF version..
 
I had the 85/1.4D and it was a belter. The ONLY problem was that it suffered a bit from CA wide open, with quite a strong cast on white objects. Would I buy it again? In a flash! For portraits, I can't beat that lens! Fantastic for subject seperation & even the busiest scene is just so smooth with it.

I've seen in reviews that the 1.4D is 3rd, sig 2nd & the AF-s 1st - but not by much..
I can hold out for a AF-S - (as its below a grand it will go under the wifes radar - lol) but the Sig is 650 - am I getting VFM ?

Anyone got the Sig on a D800 ?
 
Personaly I would say go with the sigma or wait and see if they release an art version like there 35.
I bought and own the 1.4G and it is a splendid lens and probably my favourite. But there's not much in it by most accounts compaired to the sigma. Had the sigma been out when I payed full whack just after release for the G version I would most likely have taken that instead just due to the price. I payed £1375 for the G :0

I used the Siggy 85f1.4 a lot when I was shooting weddings. I first compared it against a truly magical Canon 85f1.2II which I owned at the time and found it sharper at all apertures and significantly faster to focus. I sold the Canon and kept the Sigma. I can certainly recommend the Sigma 85f1.4.
 
thanks guys - just did a deal with my wife - she can use (permanently) my 70-200 Vr2 & I get a 85mm..

Anyone know where to get one ?

Its not the ONLY problem with with AF-D. It was a lens in desperate need of an update when the AF-S was launched. The AF-S went a long way to resolve the CA issues mentioned wide open. Its also far more contrasty and handles back lit situations a million times better. Unlike the AF-D the AF-S doesn't blow goats in the studio either.

I'm going to now buy the Sigma... - that will give me some change to get a ultrawide - lol
