I just sold my canon xl1 for £800 so have a bit of money to spend on some gear, ideally I need a new video camera that can handle HD. Needs to be small enough to carry around, I'm sure I can use my juiced link box but to have audio levels would be great.

I have a lot of mini dv tapes but I was wondering what people think about using tapes over memory cards.

Tapes are DEAD! I hate using tapes, drop frames, 1:1 transfer time and only 60 minutes each!

THIS is what I would buy, in fact its on my list to replace my HV30 when I have some spare cash. Its not a pro model but it has many pro features, including manual levels.
 
The GH1 has of late become extremely popular, there being a firmware hack.

Apparently the video quality far exceeds the 5d mk ii
