Looking for Digital SLR - Help!

Am a fan of film SLRs but would like to have a digital SLR as well. However I'm not into having to access menus in order to change settings etc and would like a camera which has at least some controls similar to those found on a film camera.

A difficult search ahead or is there something out there which doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

How much is your arm and a leg budget? ;)

Most of the cameras have the basic controls on the knobs/buttons. But perhaps looking at a d200 (nikon) or 30d (perhaps?). The older edge of pro cameras might be what you'd like.

Brand would depend on your current film camera as you may be able to use the same lenses (ok no af and perhaps no aperture... but you'd be used to that - right?).
 
Thanks for your reply. I must admit to not being very well off(!) so would hope to find something with a standard prime or zoom for under £400. Currently using a couple of Olympus OM10s, shortly to be joined/replaced by an OM2n. I;m very much in the amateur group having just returned to photography at 68 after a gap of 30-odd years!

I'm happy enough with my D3000 Which was <£300 with an 18-55 lens

New dslrs tend to have quite a few things accessible via a menu unfortunately. I don't like it either but you get used to it. Most have a few important buttons and dials on the outside.

Best thing to do is to go to a camera shop and pick up each of the 4 main dslr brands and see which you like using. I don't know which one will be most like old Olympus. There's also the olympus EP range to look at. Not really a dslr but might be easier to use if you're familar with olympus.
 
Olympus Thread might be worth a post in here... see whether there is a recommended camera that may allow the lenses you have to be used.

Ask about the PEN P1, 2 or 3 - I think the prices jump up fast to the newer ones, but the older model may do what you need.



Pop into a camera store (jessops / jacobs / london camera exchange) and seee what they have that you can hold. You can see the weight the too. Also bring your slr and a lens or two. They may be able to advise whether it a) fits or b) there is an adapter at a reasonable price.

Then it's only the memory card. You should be fine :)

seriously mine was £295 new with kit lens, so you should be able to get it cheaper than that, i think it was from the Argos outlet, look on Ebay there are loads of sellers there selling new and with warranty
