looking for new lens instead of 18-55mm kit lens

For motorsport, most people are using 200/300/400mm lenses. 18-55 is for close up paddock pics. 50 1.8 is a specialist lens for low light and/or shallow depth of field.

What exactly is it that your are wanting to shoot, and what is wrong with your current kit lens as you see it?

As alreday stated, motorsport requires reach.

Minimum really is 70-300 I would say.

As above, plus the AF on the nifty fifty is astoundingly slow. Not what you need for motorsport. I'd be looking at (in increasing price order) one of
Canon/Sigma/Tamron 75-300
Canon 70-300 IS USM
Canon 100-400L

I would look at mid range lenses
a 50-150 mm f2.8 or the 70-200 f2.8 Sigmas

helpful to capture those high speed turns.
motorsport does need a longer reach be rallying photographers (NUTTERS!!!:bonk::bonk::bonk:) get a lot closer to the action than F1 , F2 and BTCC fans.

the 50mm f1.8 is great but doesn't give you a lot of scope
I thought it would be a fast focusing lens though but I'm used to my 1.4

Hi,

Various lenses can be used, depending on the distance from the point of action - usually the longer the better. Typically 200mm + 1.4 converter is the shortest you can use. Most SLR Digital gives a further multiplication factor of approx 1.3.

Its usually 1.5x for Nikon or 1.6x for Canon.

Hi the 70-200mm f2.8 is very very quick! But also expensive:)

i have just bought the 70-20mm f4 i want a new one close to my kit lens but faster

Ah right, that's easy then. You mean faster as in wider aperture/lower f/number? Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS.

That is the best lens, closest to the kit jobbie, but expensive. Sigma and Tamron do cheaper. F/2.8 is as fast as you'll get in a zoom. Sigma also do some fast primes.
