Looking for some initial feedback

Okay, been working up a layout tonight, here it is:

The thumbs on the right left will be randomly selected from the gallery and link to the relevant gallery page.

Feedback is very welcome at this early stage, I don't want to waste time on it if it's just plain wrong.
 
Hi Sam I think your Contact and Postal address section are a bit on the large size
 
The layout is good, quick to load, bright clear and simple so far. I'm assuming what we see is going to be your contact page and not the front page? hope so anyway. None of the links work so there's not much else to say yet.
 
Except.... it's a bad idea to list your gear on your website when you are also giving out your address, that's advertising to the wrong kind of people!

The section visible will be the contact page, it was just the quickest bit to stick some content in! Not much else has been done as yet, as I just wanted some input as to whether I was heading in the right direction!

Good point about the gear listing, I'll remove that section. Viewing exif data will tell people what camera I've got but let's not make it too easy for them :)

I will probably restructure the lower 3 sections to contain a single strip with links for privacy policy and site map, as without the gear listing I've got nothing to put in those two extra spaces.

ROFL2K9 - that was a temporary error as I hadn't uploaded my function declarations when you looked! However that's all sorted now.
 
Nice clean (and very importantly consistent) layout. Good colour scheme.

Totally agree with the comments about the heading font though. Brush script is really naff! I'd recommend a clean, simple, san-serif font for a creative portfolio. Something like Helvetica Neue Light or Myriad Pro light. Think you'll get a much more professional result with that type of font.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will consider them, but from the beginning I was looking for something with more of a hand-written feel, hence the Brush Script!
 
If you're looking for a hand-written feel then have a search online for some other script/handwriting fonts. There's plenty out there! Seriously - avoid brush script though!
 
Is that just down to your opinion or is it a poor font choice generally? I don't think I've seen it anywhere else and it was my favourite out of the fonts I already have installed. I guess I need to look for some more!

I've removed it from the black headings, that's made an improvement and separates it from the header.
 
Just a word of caution on fonts

You may find a really great font online that you like and it may look great on your web site, there is problem with this however in so much that a person who is viewing your web site will only see your new and swanky font if they to have the exact same font installed on there computer as well, if they don't then all they will see is a bog standard font
 
Thanks Keith, that confirms a suspicion I had (after all, if I had to install it to see it then surely they must!). I'll stick with the pre-installed ones I think.
 
Just a small thing with regards to security as you've already given your address and a list of things to steal (already pointed out)- you've also posted the dates when you're out of the country. LOL

I do like the layout of the site too. Nice and vivid.
 
With fonts for navigation etc, just make them Jpegs, then they will show the exact font you want. I again am not a fan of brush script. It just seems a cheap font to me, same as things like Comic Sans. Simple is always better to me. Verdana, Georgia, Helvetica etc. For a hand written stlye check out pointy (google the font as a freebie)

Also referring to yourself in third person on your own site, I hate it, but a personal thing To me it's the same if I came on here and said.... Carl thinks that your font doesn't work for Carl. Carl would like to say that Carl thinks the rest of the site looks good.

I also don't see why you have a galleries section and a portfolio section, surely they are the same thing? A look at your best work.

Lastly as someone else said, you have listed your gear and the fact you will be away this summer to go to India. That kind of promotion is something you should really not look at doing!

I will be away, but the gear will be with me and the house will still be occupied with my family as it's a work trip, lol! But thanks for the info. I'm happy with posting my address and kit, basically because I'm sure the local Jessops is easier to break into (big glass window + dustbin) and has far more gear. However I do intend to remove my gear list as previosly mentioned, just as soon as I figure out what else to put in that spot. I haven't posted everything I have on there either, it was just more of a placeholder whilst the site was being created. Thanks for all the words of caution. Now all I need are some words of advice on what to fill that white space with!

Was difficult to decide what was best really, I wrote it in first person but it seemed all "me me me" and didn't read as well. I thought from the third person it would seem more objective... I'll see how I feel about it as time goes by lol!

Regarding the galleries and portfolio sections - I'm intending to stick most of my latest exploits in the gallery bit, but keep the cream for the portfolio. That way when the gallery gets taken down the portfolio shot doesn't disappear too. I also have some shots I'd like to stick in the portfolio section that don't fit into a specific gallery. Although at the moment both sections need populating with some content... I've been too busy writing the gallery scripts!
