I have been following this guy's flickr page for quite a while.
He takes a lot of shots at sunset and i have been trying to get a similar effect but have never been successfull.

Here are examples of the kind of effect i am refering to. I hope he wont mind me posting his pictures on here.. :)

Obviously is nowhere near any of those example. Now my questions are,

- He uses a 5D with several L lenses and i use a 400D with a 17-85mm lens. I am in the process of upgrading to probably a 50D but am i hoping for too much with the camera i have?

- How does he get the pink/red and blue colour effect? Do this come from post processing the images? I noticed on some of his comments he says that all he does is just some levels and curves adjustments in Ligthroom. I struggle to believe that but is it possible to get these colours straight out of the camera?

- Any more tips on how i can get similar type shots?

Nothing fancy, you don't need any kit upgrades. It's all the light.

Those are taken around dusk. Street lighting and post-sunset glow give the colours. Levels/curves and/or saturation have probably been adjusted

Maybe an ND grad for the sky as well...

Just to elaborate. At and just after sunset the sky will be way brighter than the ground, giving a way overexposed sky or a way underexposed foreground (as in the last picture). Looks like this guy has waited for the streetlights to come on and waited for the sky to fade to about the same brightness to get a balanced exposure. Perhaps about half an hour after sunset, but this time is just a guess.

Maybe. I hadn't noticed telltale darkening of sticking-up featurs but it could be so.

Thank you for the tips. I will try again just after sunset and see what i come out with. I wasnt aware that the street lights were the source of the colours. I should try again in an area where there are street lights and see the difference.

Thanks again.
