Hey

Im looking to buy a 60D body without a kit lens. I am stuck on which lens to buy to go with it.

Initially most of my photos will be of my children and some landscapes. I would say a budget of £500 for the lens give or take a few quid. I would consider buying with a kit lens but I know that I would have to upgrade at some point.

Also, I havnt used a dslr for a couple of years, I have an old 300d. (which I am selling)

Will the 60d be too advanced for me, a beginner. I want a camera I could learn a lot from and grow in to without being worried about upgrading for some time.

Also, what is the Nikon equivallent to the 60D? Keep my options open
 
Get something like a sigma 10-20mm for landscape (around £250 2nd hand) and then a 50mm f/1.8 for portraits (around £80 new).

Might give you almost enough to get a tamron 17-50 f/2.8 for a good walkabout lens (approx £200 2nd hand)

i would not think so, as you have used a 300d
 
Canon EF-S 15-85mm is ideal for your needs and is very sharp, Far better than any kit lens.
 
Good advice from mike re. the 10-20 and 17-50 both within budget if bought used. I use the 10-20 on my 60d and have the Canon 17-55 which is awesome. That pair is obviously out of budget so only you can decide wha you require, the 17-55 works well for landscapes as well but that extra 8mm on the sigma 10-20 is very nice to have.
As for the camera, well I replaced my 50d with mine and I have no regrets, it is good for a beginner but is a step up from the xxxD so will allow for growth as you learn more about your shift to digital. The 60d took (IMO) a bit of a slating in the press as a disappointing replacement to the 50d, mostly to do with the fact that it wasn't a magnesium chassis and lacked micro lens adjustments and the rear dial ( i soon adapted to that and dont miss it now). Trust me when I say it is definitely a tough camera as are all of Canon and Nikons DSLRs from any range nowadays.The only advantage of a magnesium chassis I can see is if you were driving a car over it !! Lol. It is smaller and lighter than the 50d Which may suit you better ( it did for me ) and the articulated screen/electronic level/Higher iso/HD Video and incredible battery life make it a winner in my eyes.

Had a look at this lens and read some buyers reviews, it scores highly. Im very impressed

Could be a serious contender.

Also had a look at the 55-250, would this be any good for landscapesor would it not be wide enough? I would imagine it would be quite good for potraits but in general what would this lens be mostly used for. It also has some great reviews and its a great price
