Looking to buy a new camera for stills and high quality video...

Hi guys, I've finally got some time to get myself a camera and get back into photography while I'm in-between jobs!

I started as a videographer, using the Sony PD150 camera, then I moved to a Sony Z7.

I also purchased a Nikon D200 which I used for stills but I realise it's quite dated now.

So I want to buy a camera which does both, something I can really get creative with and shoot some high quality stuff.

My budget is between £1000 - £5000.

I don't have any spare lenses or other equipment, so I'm starting fresh.

I've been out of touch with it all for a few years, so I'm coming on here for any tips.

gh-4 if you favour video

dunno if price wise you could manage it, but a gh-4 and a sigma dp would give you amazing quality in both area's :)
the sigma's video is garbage tho, crazy good stills tho :)
 
Right, I'm going for the Canon 6D, I think that's a logical next step for me.

I know about taking photos but need to learn about lenses, which I don't know much about...

Say I have a budget of about £700 for lenses, what would people suggest I get to get me started?

I want something suitable for filming and stills and something I can play with and learn that way.

why the 6d?
gh4 will kick its teeth in for video
and 70d has that sweet focus pull touchscreen thing
 
6d will kill both for stills.

Depends whether the op intends to shoot more stills or video!
 
Also, do people really want to shoot 4k, really?? 4k is it's trump card and you're paying for it.

Think of the file sizes! And of course you'd need a 4k TV or monitor to watch them back.

The 6d is still capable of shooting good video, although of course MF only. A google shows how good when you know what you're doing.

you can do 4k > 1080p downsample for very high quality, and you can crop into your 4k video too. and you have a evf too, which is better for video
if you use legacy lenses there are some adapters with variable nd built in too now...
the 6d will be better for stills thats true
 
Hi guys, thanks for the responses. Well, I'm mainly an editor and always will be I imagine. So really the photography/videography will be more of a hobby for me but it would be good to have a camera in case it is really necessary (maybe for friends weddings etc). I know there's some short-films I would like to make with friends, as well as film-making workshops with kids, at the school I work at.

I looked at the GH-4 but as mentioned above, I thought, why would I want to shoot 4k and surely it's just going to require additional equipment and occasional compatibility issues etc. Plus, I just feel more comfortable with a Canon camera, I don't know many other people with a Panasonic that I can share views with or even share lenses etc.

So I turned to the 5D mk3 and then the 6D. I've watched videos on YouTube and spoke to friends. To be honest it seems the 5D mark 3 is the best option here in terms of quality but apparently there really isn't much difference and for the price and weight of the camera, I'm just leaning towards the 6D. Especially considering this will likely be more of a hobby camera for me, than a professional one. The money I save on the camera will allow me to buy some lenses and lighting equipment, which even I know are the main things for shooting.

So, I'm still pretty sure I'll go for the 6D.

Who knows in years to come I can step up again and maybe I'll look at the GH-4 then.

So I'm just looking for some advice as to what kind of lenses I should get with the camera body as I'm not clued up on lenses!

Sony A7S, it can capture 4K videos, so how much higher quality you want more than that? and it is also great for still.

I have Sony A7R and Canon 1DX bodies for video, maybe one day i can buy more than can do video or even 4K or higher, but i am not a videographer and for Full HD is more than enough.
