Looking to get Canon PowerShot G12 / good deal

I used to do quite a bit of film photography, but haven't shot for a few years, i was looking around and decided rather than spend a ton of money on lenses to start my digital career with a DSLR i would look for a compromise camera, so after doing some research came up with the Canon Powershot G12. Has anyone had any experience with these camera? Also if anyone could recommend me a good value / trusted place to buy from i'd be greatful

Welcome to TP, I have one and use it loads,Its a great camera.I have been out with mine today and come back with 20 decent shots. They are very good if you don't want to take DSLR equipment out. Fits in a decent size pocket. You can buy adapter and different filters. I tend to use mine for macro with close up filter mostly, but also do some nice landscape stuff.I think you should be able to view kerso sales on here as he is a trader, sorry if I am wrong on that point.He is very good,I bought mine from him. thanks for the advice people, can i ask, will i be able to still use this to get some reasonable shots at a distance from my subject? i know the camera has a digital zoom and wondered what the quality i can expect (i will be taking photos of people surfing btw)

The optical zoom goes up to about 148mm, the digital zoom is about useless as on most cameras however that is just my opinion.However on full optical zoom its really good quality.
 
thats good, 150mm is borderline ok for surfing i guess, would be really sweet if i could add a 2x teleconverter / lens somehow, i heard that it has a lens ring so is this in anyway possible?
 
You can get an adapter which fits on the camera, that moves in and out with the zoom lens, the adapter can have 58mm filters or converters, I know you can get 1.4x I guess you can get 2x however not sure how good 2x will be, I will be getting the canon 1.4x which is just about £100.00 I think. which takes it too about 200.ish.

You can find adapters third party for a few pounds on ebay,But I took out one of the springs as I thought that it was quite a lot of pressure pushing against the canon zoom.

This will make more sense if you get one and you will understand how they work.

cool, still kinda unsure how it would work, as i thought that teleconverters went in between the lens and camera, or can you just stick them in front of the built in lens and they work the same? thanks for all the help btw much appreciated :~)

I've had a G12 for a few months now ever since I smashed my G9 and overall apart from it's size it's a much better camera especially in RAW which is all I now shoot. It's a bit on the large size to carry at all times, which I do but much smaller than the 40D! As a compact it's performance, in RAW is very good but will no doubt be bettered by the current crop of releases. Unlike film digital cameras are like computers and sensor and processing technology marches on but for today (Sunday) it's excellent in it's price range.

Canon G1 X - larger sensor but looks like a G12
Panasonic LX5
Samsung TL500
 
the reason i ask is b/c i am pretty much ready to get the g12, i really like the look of it, but don't want to get it and then find out some newer model G12 by canon is due in a month or whatever
 
I've got one :D - its a cracking little camera, not had it long but takes good images got loads of features, in camera hdr , tilt shift, etc, great to take out rather than the full kit. the canon G1X replaces it but its around £550
