Looking to replace my kit lens

Hi, I currently have a small collection of lenses a Sigma 30mm f/1.4, 18-55 IS kit lens (supplied with 550D) and a Canon 55-250mm.

I'm pretty happy with this setup, but I wouldn't mind improving on the kit lens. I want something a little faster and possibly wider.

What can I expect to ask for mine being two weeks old and barely used? And what sort of options do I have to replace it with?
 
Canon 17-55 2.8 or, depending on you budget, the similar spec Tamron non-VC version.

You won't get faster and wider.
 
Yes, the 17-55 2.8 seems to be the ideal, it is pricey though.

It looks like £1k on something like a 17-55 2.8 and Tokina 11-16 to achieve my faster and wider criteria.

The reviews of the sharpness offered by the Canon 17-55 2.8 is certainly appealing. What are the alternatives like? I think I'd like to stick to something IS, I don't have the steadiest of hands if I'm honest :P
 
Faster and wider on a budget the best bet would be the Tamron 17-50 F2.8 non VC version, its a cracking lens for the money and sharp as a tack.

Your fine without the IS at larger apertures, and this lens would allow you to shoot in fairly low light without to much of a problem, they do make a VC (IS) version but its not as sharp as the non VC version.
 
Sigma 17-70 2.8?

They're pretty good walk about lenses, my friends all have them, i just can't afford one just yet..

Full spec of that Sigma is 17-70mm f/2.8-4, ie it drops to f/4 at the long end.
 
I'm in a similar position and going to invest in the tamron 17-50mm 2.8 VC.

People have said the non VC version is sharper but I feel it has to be worth going for the upgraded version? In jessops it's £5 difference. Should you not go for the best spec!?

Looks a great buy either way!
