I would really like to purchase the 24-105mm L, but funds dont allow, anybody any idea's what i could buy instead, want something fast, sharp and for general shooting and portrait work

The EF28-135 IS would be the non-L equivalent. It's useable wide open but becomes a much better performer around f/8.

I have recently bought this lens and i must say i'm pretty damn impressed with it. The pic below is one of the 1st pics with it. I have not used it much since but will be taking in on hols next week. Bought mine from the bay of e for £235.

If your budget is tight, you could think about a Canon EF 28-105mm II USM f3.5-4.5 Lens at sub £100. [or a 35-105 if really tight at circa £50]
