I decided to give cleaning the sensor a go. All went well, so I decided to give the mirror and prism a wipe. On inspecting my handy work it appears that an inhabitant of Lilliput has crawled in and suffered from a bout of alopecia:bang:

The sensor is now perfect but the rogue item seems to be trapped in the prism area of the eyepiece. I've re cleaned, blown and brushed the area but it won't shift and it almost seems like it's got in behind something.

Any ideas how to shift it or just a case of put up and shut up :(
 
If it is as clearly visible as you say, it will be on the underside of the focusing screen, above the mirror.

I wouldn't worry about it. There is always some dirt inside an interchangeable lens camera. It's not good, but so long as you can see it through the viewfinder it's doing no harm. Just keep the sensor is clean.
 
As a direct result of this thread (and that video) I just bought an Ee-S screen :)
 
The focus screen on a 40D is replaceable without any messing around with the internals, it was designed to be swapped out with others (i.e. the Ee-S screen as James bought). Also, that video is for a Nikon D40, not a Canon 40D
 
Stop shooting dwarf porn.

Replacing focussing screens is a doddle. I did mine and got a grid screen which I think is better, but the set comes with the tweezers to remove it. If you don't want to buy a new screen, you could use my tweezers to take it out, clean it and refit it.
 
Baring in mind, the last time I tried to "clean and refit" a focus screen I ended up with a much nastier looking focus screen! Wouldn't recommend it unless your the most meticulous of people :D (was on a 400D though, pain to get in/out as not meant to be replaceable)
 
It's one of those things that will have no bearing on the pics but will no doubt drive me nuts just because it's there. Are there any guides out there? Thanks for the offer Andrew, if it is do-able I might be pop over :) I might quietly borrow your 24-105 while i'm rustling around in your camera bag :D
 
Good luck, should be ok on the 40D - the video I saw made it look nice and easy, just be careful not to touch it with your hands and if you use tweezers id advise wrapping the tips in something that wont scratch the screen.
 
Very easy to do and as long as you take care and have some common sense I can't see anyone having any issues. Suffice to say my view is now what can only be called 'Brazilian' :D
 
Macro makes me feel better about myself ;)
