Hi

I have recently got my hands on a virtually new 70-200 f4L and i am thinking of getting a 2x converter as the length just isn't enough as i had a 70-300 before (and even that wasn't long enough lol)
So the question is, on the f4L would i loose AF with a 2X converter??

And if so, can anyone reccommend a decent lens up to 400mm (canon fit), up to the £400 pound mark, and would anyone want to buy the 70-200 f4L? :naughty:

You would loose AF.

As for a 400mm lens for up to £400, well I hope you are not expecting anything that can come close to the quality of you 70-200 F4 because there are none. Your options will bei in the SIgma stable, the 120-400 maybe?

Well i hadn't thought that far ahead to be fair. It isn't boxed but it is in a1 condition, with manual, end caps and suede pouch.
If i was to sell it'd be up in the FS forum, but i am open to offers lol, either trade or cash.

Just thinking about the loss of AF issue. bit of a b****r that as most tele shots i would be wanting are of things that are likely to move, i.e. birds, planes etc

you won't get good results with a 2x converter, your best bet is either to buy a 100-400mm L IS or a sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 and a 1.4x TC, all for way more than £400 though

The Tokina 80-400mm is pretty good for the money though but not in the same league as the 2 above

Your 70-200 f4 would still auto focus on a 1 Series body, but you'd lose two stops and be down to an effective max aperture of f8. In all honesty a 2X converter is best used behind a prime lens - image quality would really suffer with a zoom.

This is why lenses like the Canon 100-400L and The Sigma 50-500 are so popular - they give good results and respectable reach without recourse to using converters. Even in the 2nd hand market though they're way more than your 400 quid budget.

As soon as you start looking at long primes with a max aperture large enough to take converters and still AF it gets mega expensive.

You might want to keep an eye on THIS

Less than 8 hours to go. ;)
