Argh! Lost my sound icon in my system tray. Have to go to Control Panel, Sound and do it through there. When I go to The Taskbar settings and notification area, Sound is greyed out so I can't change it so it shows again

Please help - doing my head in now

I hate Vista!

I'd probably try going to device manager and delete the sound card. Then reboot and let windows find it again and install the driver. If that didn't work then go to the sound card makers site and download and install the latest drivers. If it is built in sound on the mainboard then the computer makers site or the mainboard makers site should have drivers for download.

Have you recently intalled Service Pack 2? I think that can mess with the sound sometimes. I'd try updating the drivers but thats as far as my technical knowledge stretches I'm afraid...

have you changed anything recently? windows updates including driver updates?

have a look in device manager (right click my computer -> manage -> device manager) and see if the soundcard has an exclaimation mark on it..

When you click on sound from control panel, is there not a tick boxbox in the window that opens that you can have ticked ot unticked for if you want the sound icon in system tray? Cant remember if vista has it, not got it anymore, but that was certainly the case in XP

Try this

1.Right-Click the Taskbar.
2.Click “Properties.”
3.Find the tab “Notification Area”-click on the tab.
4.Choose which icons to be displayed in the system tray.

scratch this too, just checked in windows 7 and its no longer there, so guessing vista is the same. :(

Sorry missed that one:cuckoo:

Have you tried restarting or does anyone think this will work?

CLEARING THE TRAY ICON HISTORY

run 'regedit.exe'

goto key 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \TrayNotify'

delete keys 'IconStreams' & 'PastIconsStream'

start task manager, go to processes and kill explorer.exe

go to applications in the task manager, hit new task and type 'explorer.exe'

explorer will now reboot and woohey, your icons should return.

does vista have the xtra option at the bottom of that same window, just a line of clickable writing 'turn icons on or off'? in W7 it opens another window where you can switch them on and off too

cant remember.....i'm on XP :), It has the click boxes next to the system icon you wish to always show, if thats what you mean

:D

Thank you all

Did an uninstall and a reinstall and it has come back. But yes, I had a SP update on Friday
