Yes
I recently returned from turkey whilst there I had taken photos and transferred them from my CF card to a portable hard drive using the hotels computer; I actually saw them on my drive after the transfer. However on my return to the UK and with excitement went to view them they had gone disappeared totally.
At first I thought the x-ray machine at the airport may have wiped them but there were other things on my drive and they were still there. I do know that the hotel computer once rebooted returned to its original settings meaning that anything that had been added during the day of use was lost upon re-boot but surely once transferred to another drive this would not happen??
Any one has any ideas? How I could get them back or are they lost forever… thank you

Dont re-use the card or drive! If you do you may overwrite the images then they are pretty much gone for good, get yourself some data/image recover software and theres a fair chance you'll get them back ok.
I'm not quite sure I fully understand whats happened in your case, was your hard drive connected to the computer when it rebooted? if so it may have deleted the images off if it's set to "go back" to a set point on reboot (seems odd thing to do though) however even if deleted the pics should be still there, it's only the "index" thats actually deleted, so the computer can't see them.

absolutely...i had a similar problem...olympus told me to send the card to them and they would recover the stuff
as it happens i had reformatted so i goofed

there are free software downloads which recovers from hard drives

When you unplugged the hard disk from the hotel computer, did you use the 'Safely Remove Device' option, or did you just unplug it?
Unfortunately, it is possible that although you saw the images on the hard disk, that the operating system was still copying the data.
Unless you remove the 'Safely remove device' function, then you cannot be assured that the copy has been finalised.
As the others have said, do not write anything to the drive or CF now. Use a recovery tool.
