Low cost laptop advice appreciated

Hi there

Only laptops I've had have been through work so have no experience of buying one.

Anyway - I'm looking to buy a cheap laptop for my daughter's 12th birthday.

1 - Need to be able to connect wirelessly to home network
2 - CD/DVD writer
3 - As for use - the usual internet use, a few web based games and obviously schoolwork. Hard drive doesn't need to be massive and graphics I can't imagine are in huge demand.
4 - Screen, the bigger the better but not massive.
5 - Probably easier to stick with XP

Is this a decent place to look for a refurb or anywhere else to look?

Personally, I'd avoid an AMD processor. They're more power hungry than the Intel equivalent.

£200 means seconds or more probably, something older. It's going to be the luck of the draw there... and you'll have no idea how good/bad the battery is.

Sorry yes - probably looking at refurbished from somewhere....

And what I was saying was that when you do this, you'll end up with poty luck as to how good/reliable the machine is.

Having said that, I'd see if I could find a first gen core i3 with as much memory as possible. Also research replacement battery costs as that's likely the thing that will need changing at some point.
 
Look at 3000rpm.com they do some nice cheap refurbs with acceptable spec.
