low light and portrait use 50mm f/1.8 D

I know the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 D AF Lens does not autofocus on DX format bodies, but I was thinking to use it just for low light and portrait situations. Such as taking family pics in the park etc, and maybe a few evening shots when I have more time to manually focus.

I could live without autofocus so long as this is the only compatibility issue with the 50mm f/1.8 D format lens on a DX body. I have turned off the autofocus on my kit lens to get the feel, and while it at times is hard work I could probably get used to it. Besided autofocus of an evening with the focus light turned off, the lens would be hunting about anyway.

Does this post make sense, or am I talking poop

The reason I am looking at the older lens rather than the G, is I have seen the older lens a lot cheaper..

Just be aware that the depth of field with the 50mm 1.8 will be approximately a third of your kit lens, so focus needs to be more accurate. I borrowed my brothers 50mm 1.4 and the depth of field is ridiculously smal at times, and the 1.8 is going to have much more.

It will AF on a DX body, but alas the D60 is so called 'crippled' as it lacks the screw drive motor.
