Hi

I am looking for a decent low light lens for my Canon 60D. I want it for baby shots, family weddings/christenings etc and general indoor family portrait style shots.

My current lenses are:
Canon 15-85mm
Canon 50mm f/1.4
Sigma 120-400mm (for wildlife)

I love my 50mm but need something wider angle as well. My budget is up to £400 but the cheaper the better obviously.

I am considering the Canon 28mm f/1.8 or sigma 30mm f/1.4. I have also thought about the sigma and tamron 17-50 f/2.8 etc but I don't know enough about the third party zoom lenses.

Any advice or alternative recommendations would be much appreciated.

I prefer second hand if it's in good condition to save me money but I have struggled to find a decent Canon 28mm f/1.8 in the second hand market.

Siggy 30mm f1.4 seems to be a good choice. I had one and loved it and it was sharp at f1.4. You get a hood and a case with it too.
 
I agree with Alan, if you're after something wider than a 50mm, the 30 1.4 is a very nice lens and would fit the bill nicely. I'd recommend setting your 15-85 to 30mm and seeing how you enjoy the field of view. I'd say you won't be disappointed with it.

Thanks for the advice. Off what I've read the Canon seems to get better reviews though. My first choice was the sigma but after reading about focusing issues the Canon took it's place.
 
To be honest I couldn't comment on the Canon 28mm, I've used two copies of the Sigma and both were great. I personally know people with the Sigma and no one using the Canon.

The Canon 35mm f/2 is very good.

Or the sigma 30mm variants are also very good as already said.

The Canon 28mm f/1.8 is quite a rareity though I have noticed amazon have new stock for about £388.

I think 35mm my be too close to my 50mm compared to the 28mm and 30mm.

Do you know why the Canon 28mm is such a rarity? It seems strange for any Canon lens to have so few floating about.

Not sure really, though a lot of people went for the cheaper 28mm f/2.8 so they are far more common on the used Market.

With regards to the 35mm, I have both this and the 50 and focal length wise they are more different than you'd imagine. I find on my crop the 35mm is far more versatile, though not a wide angle by any stretch.
 
I think I'm leaning more towards the Sigma now :-) I'll see if I can get a Swindon hand copy somewhere first.
 
I think the Sigma is a good choice! If I didn't already have the Canon 35mm I'd be after one myself.
