Which one... and are both the right size. I've done my research and both seem like they'll be about big enough for me. The problem is, I can't find any shops that stock these so will need to buy online. The Lowepro looks like it might be comfier when fully loaded?

Decisions, decisions...

Can nobody offer any opinions on which of these is the better bag?

You're both in time. I am finding myself dithering. Those are blooming big bags - am I aiming too small, or do you have huge telephoto's? My 70-200 is the biggest I have and likely to be my biggest ever. Arghhh!!

Ive got an expedition 4, ive only just got it but ive got a gripped 50d+24-105L attached, 70-300, 10-22, 17-85 in it and there is still a fair bit of room in it. I know the 70-200 is quite large, if you want any pics of mine with my gear in let me know.

I got the Tamrac Expedition 5 and fit in with room to spare:
40D, 17-85mm IS USM, 70-200mm f4L, EOS 1n, 35-70mm, Sigma 500 super something flash and some cloths, lens pen, filters, bags, films, memory cards, user manuals, batteries and the tripod hangs on the back.
I can carry it around all day without any problems.

Any pics of either of these bags with gear in would be most useful. At this rate, i'll end up having to order 3 or 4 bags, and return 3 of em, which will cost a fortune in P+P.

I'll sort a photo out this evening when I get home.

I have the Expedition 8 as well.

Great bag carries all in my sig plus tripod/monopod and loads of bits.
Extremely comfortable over extended periods.
Agree buy bigger than you need as you will fill it.

I have a Vertex 200AW. I chose this as it was the largest and you should always choose a bag bigger than what you think you may need. I have included in mine 2x bodies, 28-70L Lens, 70-200f2.8L lens 300f.8L lens, flash, spare batteries wetgear, rain covers and even possible for a laptop! You can also fit a monopod or lightweight tripod and as small collapsible stool. When not taking the 300 I can easily fit a flask instead ;)

This was bought from Comley Cameras in Cleethorpes but they did have to order it for me as they only had the smaller one in stock at the time.

Personally I always fit flasks or water bottles onto the outside attachments.
I don't believe in putting fluids in with my kit just in case.

Sorry it's a bit late.
Flash unit is missing as it's on loan to a mate.
* is a bit of spare space, enough room for a small lens.

Many thanks for that... and I'm really grateful as it looks smaller than I would have thought.

Can anyone shed any light on the weatherproofness of either the Tamrac Expedition or Lowepro Vertex?

I know the Lowepro has a rain cover much the same as my slingshot. But I can't find out much about the Tamrac. I can just find the following sentence...

"a LockDown™ rain flap protects the zipper from the elements. A large front pocket with a water-resistant zipper"

Which could mean anything!

The tamrac range is pretty watertight with good protection over the zips.
I like to be extra careful and purchased the additional cover that comes in a pack you attach to the outside of the bag, for those reallyhuge downpours.
Last used it at Waddington 2008 for rain on saturday and everything was bone dry.

Sonemthing I have found useful with bags - the ability to hold the camera + lens + hood in position.
I now try for this on every bag I view - it often means buying bigger but having everything in the bag ready to shoot is truly worth it. I'm no longer able to do this (Hence me looking for a new bag) and I really do miss that. With you 70-200 you shold have no problem doing that - even a Mini trekker will fit.

OK, just to put to bed once and for all my many bag posts (well, there seems to have been a few), I have today looked at (in the flesh, so to speak) and plumped for a Lowepro Vertex. Probably the 100AW, though maybe the 200AW. I need to check sizes with my gear and consult the missus, for whom the bill will be sent. Oooo, my Birthday soon!

For anyone looking at a backpack, the quality of the Lowepro p!sses all over Tamrac as far as I can see, and if you're going to be lugging this thing around all day/half day the quality of the straps is superb. As far as I can tell, pretty much near the technical quality of my Berghaus rucksack with the ability to shift the position of the load on your back.

Can't wait! There'll be no excuses for not carrying everything around with me. Except for the fact that i'd look a twit wandering round Tesco with what looks like a suitcase strapped to my back!
