Does that make sense or does that kinda mess up the whole testing thing? :)

Sames as it was for earlier versions IIRC and it makes sense.

It's a [public] BETA. Unfinished, with likely many bugs and the catalog format liable to change.

If they allow you to import your LR3 catalog, you can bet that some numpty would move all their photos into LR4b (quite feasibly followed by deleting their LR3 catalog) and then complain loudly when it stops working.

Doing it that way they're forcing you to keep LR3 and LR4b separate until the final release.

i can see that side of the arguement but it just seems weird to have a beta where you can't really test it with real worldy ness :) like anyone that's actually got a job to do i can't seriously see making a brand new catalog and faffing :)

You can still add your original images into a new LR4 catalog (File > Import...) and leave the RAW files in place on disk for LR3's catalog.

Add as many as you like of those. You just can't carry over your edits, keywords and other catalog data.

P.S. Since LR4 has a new rendering engine, carrying over your edits with the 2010 renderer is pretty pointless unless you're actually going to use them in anger and you've got LR3 for that until LR4 ships. You're going to want to play with the 2012 RAW conversion.

The beta expires on March 31st so that's probably a reasonable indicator. Not an exact date mind but would expect the release to be close on either side.

Thanks. I think I will stay clear of the beta this time round and grab LR4 if it looks good. The wife will still be a student too...

You can get it from here
