Hi - finally worked out how to shoot my 7D tethered to LR4 (close everything to do with DPP it seems) - but it's taking about 13 seconds for every shot to come in. Is that just the way it is, or am I doing something wrong?

Probably not. The files have to be transferred by USB imported into Lightroom and then rendered. My 1Ds RAW files take about the same time
 
Thank you Chappers, I'll have to learn a bit of patience then!
 
You could change the rendering to a lower setting to help with the import, also you could shoot raw & Jpg and let LR just import the Jpg for studio speed, then when finished import the raws too.

Depends how long your cable is, some long cables can take longer.

It's never easy is it!

The cable is pretty long (I brought it deliberately to be able to move about). Think I might try the jpeg option first - is that easy to set up (not in front of the set up at the moment)?

You can do it with the DPP software that came with your camera or Lightroom.
 
Wireless can cost a lot of money....both Nikon and Canon have a wireless transmitter and they can cost hundreds or there are the eye-fi cards (?) which transmit from the compact flash (or equivalent) to the laptop. The cable is the cheapest option by far.

I have used both LR and Canon Utilities to tether and both have + and - points.

On a newish Canon, the cable fits into the mini usb terminal on the camera and then attaches to the pc/mac via a normal usb socket. I am sure you get a short one supplied with a new camera.
 
If you are over 5M then you need an active USB cable. It stops signal corruption plus also prevents the Camera/ Laptop link dropping. Anything less you can probably get away with a normal USB extension cable
