LR4 why no darker colours in 'select a colour'

But wonder whether I am missing a point?

I like to choose the brush with varying values and tweak individual areas. Whilst there is a 'select a colour' option there are no dark colour options. Unless I am missing a point - am I

Yes this is something I do & I should have made my OP clearer. What I am after is to be able to have an option for black & not just a darker version of any individual colour. In the absence of a black colour selector I have just being doing, as you suggest, using the exposure slider as far left as it will go with flow & density at 100% to get a black'ish look.

If you click in the grey color box ...... you will get a fly out colour picker box for you to choose your desired colour.

Is that what you mean?
