Last night I was putting my Sigma 120-400 away in it's case (it usually spends a lot of time on the camera). I laid it on the bed and it somehow rolled off falling with a thud to the floor. Picking it up I could hear the sound of broken glass rattling.
Once I'd got the lens cap off I could see that the UV filter had shattered and when I tried removing it I found it to be soldidly jammed. After carefully removing the broken glass I was able to take the ring off - after which I was able to use the rocket blower to clear the remaining fragments from the filter thread. Fortunately the the lens seems OK - focussing and stabilising fine, there's no CA or distortion. The broken filter hasn't marked the element either.
Although the lens is insured, I'm so relieved it's OK.
I guess that this proves to me that even when a lens shouldn't roll, it still can!
