Last night I was putting my Sigma 120-400 away in it's case (it usually spends a lot of time on the camera). I laid it on the bed and it somehow rolled off falling with a thud to the floor. Picking it up I could hear the sound of broken glass rattling.

Once I'd got the lens cap off I could see that the UV filter had shattered and when I tried removing it I found it to be soldidly jammed. After carefully removing the broken glass I was able to take the ring off - after which I was able to use the rocket blower to clear the remaining fragments from the filter thread. Fortunately the the lens seems OK - focussing and stabilising fine, there's no CA or distortion. The broken filter hasn't marked the element either.

Although the lens is insured, I'm so relieved it's OK.

I guess that this proves to me that even when a lens shouldn't roll, it still can!

I think it's trying to tell you something... if it's rolling off the bed I reckon it wants to spend more time resting in its case!

or perhaps it's a suicidal lens? maybe you should take it to see the doctor.

lens safety are treated on the same line as sensors and most will say how delicate they are but really they are built to take a certain amount of abuse. i recently dropped my 50mm on the floor from about 8 foot onto carpet and i was relieved that it never broke however i also expected it not to break because it was on carpet.

did you drop yours on carpet or did you drop it on wood flooring, tiling?

He didn't drop it... it rolled off the bed... I'm telling ya, that lens is trying to commit suicide!

I thought I was tall at 6'4! :bonk:

Lens juggling, there's a new hobby.

Moral of the story?

Don't use a UB filter... :p

Lens juggling - done that I used to juggle 2 300mm f2.8L and a working chainsaw. I was bloomin' good at too - never broke a single chainsaw.

I think it might have been suicidal - maybe it realised it wasn't L glass and couldn't cope with the stigma of being sigma and had to end it all!

Seriously this served as a reminder to be careful when handling lenses, but also illustrated that they are a lot tougher than you'd think (although that doesn't mean they should be thrown around routinely!)

Should have kept the tripod ring / collar on and it wouldn't roll anywhere...

That was the worst of it - the collar was on, but I think the soft surface meant that it dug in and just allowed the lens to roll - because the collar was at the top (handle position) the lens had just enough momentum to roll. I think it was definitely a freaky accident where several factors comibined to scare the pants off me.
