do any of you noble folks use the lumix silkypix software which comes with the camera

if so ...how the hell do you save an image which has been taken in raw.. processed in the software...and save to jpeg?

Silkypix is made by The Devil. Burn it.

I gave up with it long ago when I caught it telling big lies. Images that looked good in the Silkypix RAW converter were crap when saved as JPEG's. I now use CS5 although I suppose almost anything would be better than Silky...

I suppose your options are to use the bundled Panny software, buy something else or use a free package like Rawtherapee which will open my G1 and GF1 RAW files. Another opton could be to convert to DNG if there's a problem opening the G1 files with your software of choice.

If you must use The Devils software...

Open Silkypix.
Go to File and select Open File. Work your way to the folder containing the files you want to process.
Select the file. Work on it to your hearts content. Once you're done go to...
Development. Select what you want to save it as and save it.
Make cup of tea.

i am burning it right away...i was using the olympus software but it wont open lumix files...tough because i liked it
i have photoshop elements 2...a freebie from long time ago..and it wont take a raw plug in
guess i will have to shop around and see if i can get a s/h cs5 if you say thats the one...
i have got an hdr software package which will open and then save to jpeg just as the picassa 3 i have does
but it would be nice to have one opening and closing on a file and save it for show..instead of waltzing around from pp to pp

in any event that lumix is going to be taken off my laptop
and the CD consigned to the makers box..

You might like the latest version of Elements. Have a look at the Adobe site, you can download trial versions for free and give them a try before you buy. Elements will be a hell of a lot cheaper than Lightroom or CS5 or whatever the latest version number is.

I tried Elements and I thought that it was OK but included too many auto fixes and not enough manual control.

PS. Don't forget that converting to DNG might enable you to use the software you want. DNG converter is free, Google and you shall find.

yes i have now downloaded the dng convertor
i try to open olympus and lumix raw files but it wont recognise them
perhaps i have this the wrong way round
what i would like to do is be able to use the lumix stuff on the olympus master suite i got with my e-420
i probably am throwing snowballs at the moon here
whats your take Alan?
 
I've just tried the DNG Converter on my PC and it converts G1 RAW's. It's confusing as when you select the folder it doesn't display the files, the folder looks empty, but it does convert them. However, I don't know if converting to DNG will enable you to use your Oly software. You may have to give up and use the dreaded Silkypix or something else.

If I were you I'd use Silkypix (with gritted teeth and whilst holding a crucifix,) and possibly look at the Adobe site with a view to downloading a trial version of Elements or something else or have a look at the free to download and use Rawtherapee which will process G1 RAW and JPEG files.

Ahh Silkypix, can think of a few more appropriate names ;)

I'd take a look at Lightroom if you can afford it.

There's also GIMP. That's a free photoshop style software and it opens RAWs. The RAW plugin is usually included in the download but you can get it separately too if it isn't.
 
thanks chaps...i have resolved the issue in the meantime
i am taking my shots in best jpeg and can use the oly master 2 to do the basic adjustments and then on to my elements 2 for the final pp stuff
or take raw and use my hdr suite..oloneo..to do pp without tone mapping
just the basic tonal sliders
usually my shots are slightly underexposed to avoid burnt highlight/use 100 iso.. and i use the tone curves to restore to normal..at least my normal
i havent really gotten used to a prime shot at correct exposure..they all seem too bright and happy clappy to me
