Just read Slimbert's thread and thought what the hell - I quite fancy doing one of these, though other than a picture a week, not really that sure about what else happens in a 52/365.... I gather theres a weekly theme, which the person doing the thread sets, or others make suggestions?

We'll see what happens.

Please feel free to comment as you wish / critique as much as you like / I am thick skinned and won't chuck toys....:dummy: I see a steep learning curve in 2010....

Nice one I am looking forward to seeing some of your interpretations on the themes. Good luck

OK - I down, 51 to go.

Taken today at Weybourne - the nice chappie even came down low to buzz us for a fly past. Here he is heading towards Sheringham.

(OK so only 1 albeit big "curve" - supporting him and his big fan!)

Thanks for looking. C&C by all, welcome as always.

Nice shot like the colours shame he could not get a bit closer though rather him than me.

Good luck

Cool! I wonder if it was Fred who runs the caravan park we stay at. He does this stuff.

nice curve, but it's almost incidental to the picture
a real close close-up - now that would work!

thanks - all so far, Briony, yeah - by the time I worked out what he was up to, I was the wrong side of a fishing boat - and had a 17-70 on board (all the long stuff in the car - well, it's only a bloody fishing boat [what we stopped to take a pic of] , why will we need longer than that? ...... oh look, quick, damn, long lens, ah car.....!) here's an "in descent" one........... and a bit closer up.......... (don't know if I am allowed to post more than 1 a week in a 52, but, it's my thread and i'm going to.......... otherwise...:dummy:)

Kind of works better for the curve bit I guess.........(and you'll never know if the horizon was "on the huh.")....

much more curved!

(oh and he's absolutely mad btw)

yep - I agree - love to fly, but I prefer something more than a kite and a fan strapped to my back to transport me from A to B.......... though, to be honest, I'd propbably give it a go - might need a slightly larger kite thing by the way!!!

Ok - losing the plot somewhat.............:cuckoo:

How do I change the overall thread title - as will obviously need to do this on a weekly basis.............:bonk::bonk::bonk:

I thought - I clicked on "go advanced" - then entered a new Title in the box above the one I am typing in now................

However, appears to be slightly more complicated than that.......

Ah - now I have read Simon's PM properly!!!!!!! OK

Cheers

Second one is much better...

Great start to your 52 Lynton!

I could've tied his shoe laces together he came down so low....!! And the mad git wouldn't stop waving at us :cuckoo:

Great couple of shots.

I prefer the second one, but think the 'curve' is more obvious on the first and more apt for the theme.

I'm gonna be posting a second attempt at the first theme myself so wouldnt worry about it. It means more feedback and more to learn from.

Dan.

like both but as others have said the second edges it.. great angle really shows the curve of the errmm.. kite thingy! ;)

great sky and the red in his suit fab against it

Liking both shots but the second says curved more than the first, where the scenery somewhat takes over the image. Nicely taken.

I prefer the second one, but both are good, in fact, I counted at least 6 curves in the first one. Nicely done and on theme.

I like the second shot better - fewer distractions, and there are plenty of curves in it still.

Ooh what a hard choice - both great shots but #1 pips it for me as it places the flyer in context and adds scale and height :) and so many more curves as John says :)

Very nice pair of shots!

thanks all, bloody struggling for week 2 though........ poetry, poems, "thass a bit...........gay" as we say "Hare.........in Norfolk......" .... couple of ideas though.........

Well here we go with week 2.

Initially struggled with inspiration for this one, as not a huge fan of poetry, other than war poets, and a few other "Classics" - and the weather outside isn't conducive to a lot of inspiration either unless there are a lot of poems about Snow - I am sure there are........

Anyhow, I know the point of a 52 - is to be given a topic and then go off come up with the goods, and as such I am doing this a bit ar$e about face, as driving down to London yesterday it hit me. Not sure which came first to my brain, the poem or the photograph, but here you are.

High Flight - by John Gillespie Magee Jr. - First heard this at the British Legion Festival of Rememberance a few years back, and it sort of stuck with me.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark nor even eagle flew—
And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

C&C as ever welcome (and I do realise, haven't done it in the most conventional way, though I wanted to use this poem, and a lack of air displays this week!)

Really like the crop in this pic Lynton. Well done

There really is a poem on every subject and it is cool to find one that has connections to the sort of photography you enjoy.

Roll on Sunday when the next theme is drawn....

Dan

Lynton, I love flying and flight so a good choice :D... Excellent Poem and the image really works well with it. Only ... it all looks a bit soft ish... actually, it looks like compression artefacts... look closely around the wings. (I had this myself a while back, took me some fair amount of experimenting to resolve but it made what was a sharp image on the PC look really poor after export).

John - fair point, and I agree. Was shot handheld on a 120-400 Sigma, at the 400 end of the range which seems to be a bit soft at the best of times - and a bit of a crop!

Any ideas as to how to sharpen it up if its possible - as that is one bit of PS I don't "get" - thanks

Lynton

Nice shot Lynton - the afterburner comes out really well... this plane was at Lowestoft this last year, is that where you took it? Loving that poem, says it all really.

Arthur

That looks like you've removed the compression artefacts... the file size is big too. As for sharpening.. you could use Unsharp Mask (filters, sharpen I think). Or run a high pass on it... Add a new layer, set the blending mode to soft light, run a high pass filter on it with a setting of about 10, you can tweak the setting if you've set the blending mode in advance as the preview will display the adjustments.

In early this week with some freshly chopped Biltong. If you don't know what Biltong is and you want to know click here.

The cutter (or chopper) I picked up in Franschoek, South Africa for ZAR150 - which was around £10 at the time, and I now make my own Biltong using the homemade Biltong dryer that lives in the garage.

Lekker!

I was going to mention that for the first time ever this week I exported some to South Africa, which is a bit like "coals to Newcastle", but if you work for HRMC, then I didn't, I just made that bit up!

Lovely clear shot love the wood grain but hate biltong

Nice sharp shot and interpretation of theme.

I'm still stuck

Well done

hate biltong

wheres that "ignore" button?

Hi Lynton,

Catch up on poetry first . . . and that is some shot!
OK maybe a bit of a cheat, but it works brilliantly and I wouldn't even know where to start with something like that.

Chopped has been an education for me. Never heard of Biltong before, it looks like a cross between chocolate and leather . . . but I hope it tastes better than that
Lovely colours in that shot. Great wood grain and nicely composed.
That cutter looks pretty lethal!

Interesting... not heard of Biltong either, not a Biltong chopper for that matter ;)... Anyway, good shot, love the colours and textures, but agree with Sarah... it has connotations of a guillotine about it.

Week 4 - street. Thought I'd go for a B&W conversion on this one.

St Benedict's in Norwich, isn't the nicest area of the city, so was hoping to get a bit of moodiness and grittiness feeling into the shot. Not 100% sure if this will stay the Week 4 shot or not, however I do like the pair of trainers strung over the powerline. They've been there a while. Can think of at least 2 other pairs of trainers over power lines like this in Norwich. Is it a Norwich thing or a countrywide phenomenon?

stbenedicts.jpg

Could be a street in most small towns I think B&W was the only way to go with this picture, as for the trainers over the power line its suppose to represent a warning ie gangs(chavs) warning you are in their territory :cuckoo: street photography is a difficult subject and one I don,t really feel qualified to pass judgement on but looks ok to me:thumbs:

Sarah - thanks for your kind comments - appreciated........the poem and that pic do blend well, even if not the sharpest image of the plane. Will have to work on that sometime when I know a bit more photoshop.

John - glad to have introduced you to the wonderful world of Biltong. It is truly an amzing and addictive taste. Many a time, i've gone through about a lb of it watching a game of rugbyand also obviously being male, refereeing it too from the armchair.

Shaun - thanks for comments, and have a sense of satisfaction of knowing what the trainers thing is.

That is an interesting street and the trainers add to it! It is all a bit dark on my monitor, though.
