Trying to have a web link open automaticaly to another site within a page of frames. It is a 2 frame window and saves 3 files (1 for the header, 1 for the main and one for the hyperlink)

The problem arises when i open the new page and it loads ok other than the hyperlink does not open automatically a new external web page. It has the normal hyperlink underlined text in the window, which I have to click to redirect. I want it to open automatically. Anybody give me any pointers please

Sorry, not really sure of the question.

You've created a frameset and you want one of the frames to open up with an external site, yes?

There are a few interpretations of what you are asking here. External content within a frame of the existing browser window? External content in a new browser window?

Anyhow...

If what you are trying to do is view external content in one of the the frames of the current browser window then you could use something like.

<FRAMESET rows="100, 200">
<FRAME src="contents_of_frame1.html">
<FRAME src="http://www.whateversite.com/page.html">
</FRAMESET>

This is a fairly basic use of frames which is well supported and easy to maintain. The use of external content in the frame may be blocked by the browser (browser and setting dependent). However, frames are now depreciated ie. the use of frames is generally a no no in the web community. Lots of reasons for this but a major issue with frames has always been the different ways different browsers and different versions of the same browser handle frames. Frames are also not very portable ie. they do not display well across different device types. This is becoming less of an issue as small browsers (mobile phone etc.) become more sophisticated.

An option is the use of 'iframes' (in-line frames) which is popular.

The option I prefer to use is CSS div tags and in-line includes statements for the content. This does not work cross domain for server side #includes but does work cross domain for ASP and PHP files.

Thanks John, The script you have given me is the same as I've been trying to use as well, but still not auto activating.......very strange. I'm trying to link picasa in.
 
Hmm, a thought. Are you testing in IE with files saved on your HD? It could be that security options in IE are preventing local files (the frameset) from accessing stuff on the interwebs. Try uploading the files to your host and see if it works then.
 
I'm wondering whether or not my browser does not support frames. I'm running Xp and IE 7?????
 
Yes it supports frames but as I said above the problem might be that you're checking the files locally - which means files on the your HD. IE has some security settings that will stop a HTML file on your HD from accessing the internet as well as doing some other stuff and that could be why your frameset isn't loading the remote page.

Upload the files and test them online and see if it works then.

I Frames ? I've only just managed to use frontpage, without getting technical again for a computer illiterate like myself. I'll have a look at them though.....see if they are simple (like me, B4 anyone else says it!!)
