Looking at maybe getting a couple of these and an adaptor for my D90, just to have a bit of a play.

I realise I will lose my metering etc, but does anyone have any advice they could share on do's or don't's or any hints or tips.

Cheers

Ish, Nikon and M42 don't sit 100%.
M42 lenses will not focus to infinity on Nikon body's, unless you buy an adapter with an optical element.
Putting an optical element of questionable origin and performance behind a bodacious piece of glass, could be counter productive....:)

I'm not saying don't do it, its just that with Nikon and Olympus there are a couple of other complications.....:(
I've had to buy a Canon,..:|... that's how unwilling I was to put m42 on a Nikon.

My advice would be to buy 1 lens and 1 only!!!! It's so easy to get sucked into these fab lenses and before you know it you will have 20 sitting on your shelf! To keep costs down try a Helios 44 2 (58mm f2) as they are great lenses and cost next to nothing. Mine was £8 delivered! If you like the idea of Manual lenses look at Carl Zeiss and Asahi Pentax/Takumar lenses. There are many others! Typically a 55mm f1.8 Super Takumar should be about £25. An 85mm f1.9 Super Takumar is £100 on the bay as they are very rare.

If you can get the adapter for the Nikon, have a look at Olympus Zuiko lenses, they really are the nuts!

I have just ordered an adapter from amazon to use a Super takumar 50f1.4 on my D2X just to see what they are like

so what are the other complications?

I think the back of the lens hits the mirror as it flips up when taking the shot. If you get the right adapter you should be fine.

A couple more complications additional to that detailed in your first post.
re- "I will lose metering etc"

If I was getting one, I'd see how I went on with a ring with no optical element and take the no infinity focus on the chin..:)
It'd be interesting to know how much of a handicap that really is..
