M42 Portrait...

Ok, kind of covered this in F&C But trying a different take on it here...

Canon EOS1000D (And 300D) with M42 adapter (non chipped). I wish to get a "Portrait" lens.

Now everytime I read the forums I see the 50mm F.18 Canon fit style lenses praised and praised but being who I am, I like budget
I appreciate its only £80 but thats more than I would like to spend initially on a bit of an experiment. (E.g im not sure I want to move towards portrait stuff yet)

Now I see £20/£30 lenses going on Ebay all day long at the 50mm range but figuered I would ask if there are better options out there seeing as I am going down the M42 route...

I've a few 50-58mm M42's. Looking for them as individual lenses, they seem to be more pricey than if I search for the camera eg instead of 'Helios 58mm' I'll look for 'Zenit E', rather than 'CJZ Pancolar 50', try 'Praktica'. Portraits aren't my thing but I did a quick test using the never-complaining Klaus, Oly e620, plain adapter and bounce flash from the hotshoe. Couldn't stop down a couple: no manual aperture setting on 2 of the lenses, so I did them all wide-open, to be fair.

Look for a Heilos 58mm f2. I've got the 44M version and its great. Really sharp wide open. and only cost a tenner or so.

As above. The only thing which might need doing is the grease changing. This is easily done on the 44m4 i have.
