Hi

I installed a second external back up drive onto the mac this afternoon. As I installed it I got a message asking if I wanted to use it as a back up for time machine. I said yes and away it went. We only bought this current mac about 4 weeks ago and up until now I have just loaded the images onto the desktop and then copied that folder onto an external hard drive, not linked to time machine giving me two copies.

This was just a temp measure since of course the more you fill your operating disc the slower things can get.

So off went time machine and backed up 1.1 million items and 182 gigs of files - :D:D:D we must have been busy.

I am now wondering if I can get the time machine to back up the first external hard drive so if anyone has any tips please shout.

I am also planning to plug the new external, the one linked to time machine into a second mac we have to make sure it can read the back-up. Any info on this again gratefully received

In Time Machine prefs, there's an options button that leads, basically, to the list of devices, folders etc. NOT to be backed up. If your first external HD is in there, it could be removed and Time Machine should back it up. Or... it could be the case that Time Machine is already doing it. Perhaps enter time machine and see if you can look back through it.
 
Thanks Mr_pants. Being of the rather careful type I unplugged the other external drive before plugging in the time machine in case of mishap. Reading your post once I plug it back in auto backup will occur?

AFAIK, you should just plug in the other external drive and go, as you said. Perhaps check the Time Machine prefs after plugging back in. Then, after the next TM backup, you could delve into the external HD to see if it's been included. Nothing like checking, is there?
 
lol, just entered time machine and watched the desktop dissapear and a fantastic night scene appear, makes you panic at first :D:D:D
