So one week out of warranty, my sons MAC book dies. White screen and the back of the case gets very hot.

Tried all combinations of cmd button + various keys, it never goes past the white screen.

With Cmd + S if it was a hard drive failure, should it still go into single user mode ?

It had a hard drive replacement about 6 months ago.

Anyone have any other ideas before I trot off to the Apple store ?

Do you see the Apple symbol. Any "Bongs"

Try booting from the system disk to see if that boots. If it does run Disk utility, repair disk and see if that works. looks as though it's getting to the BIOS but not any further

Don't see the Apple symbol.

It just makes the normal sound as soon as you press the power button.

It sucks in the disk but does not recognise it.

I think i have had that a few times (usually just after an update) it takes a few attempts but if you hold the power button for a few seconds to switch it off and try restarting it and leave it to boot for several minutes, if its what happened to mine then it may take a few tries before it will come alive.... i hope this is all that is wrong with it....

Have just tried 'alt' as it boots, as if going into bootcamp.

The mouse cursor comes up if you do this and you can move it around the screen.

Have you added any memory to it?

Do you have a spare hard drive you could try fitting to it? It may be sat trying to work out what HDD it has fitted to it, if the drive is on the way out.

It's not uncommon for me to see PC's sat at the BIOS screen for 20 minutes while trying to determine just what is hanging off the end of an IDE cable when the drive is on it's last legs, so maybe the Mac is doing the same thing.

My gut feeling is that the drive has failed.

In the past I have bought 2 or 3 different drives from Ebuyer and none of them
were recognised by the Mac.

Not sure if I was doing anything wrong, I will see if I can obtain a drive to try it out with.

Just had a surprise call from Applecare, letting me know the warranty runs out tomorrow.
Funny how yesterday the Apple store said it had already run out, when we rang them back today they agreed with Applecare.
So going in tonight and hopefully it will all be sorted under warranty.

I did notice that you can buy Applecare on Ebay, has anyone ever risked this ? I can pick the Macbook one up for about £75.

There isn't really a great deal to do wrong with fitting drives in them (assuming it's the white macbook), so if you've historically had a couple that wouldn't be recognised, there's a good chance it's the controller on the mainboard which is faulty.

Still, good news on the warranty front!

I bought my MacPro AppleCare on ebay at a fair old discount - I was able to register it just fine.

?

Forget 12 mths you are covered by the sale of good act, merchantable quality and fit for purpose you paid a lot of money and for it to pack up in 12 mth is not what anyone would expect.
You go back to the Seller where you bought it

The macbook is now in with Apple, they think it is the mother board.

Also purchased the extended Applecare from a US Ebay seller for about £76. It is all registered and showing on my Applecare agreements page.

My Imac warranty will run out next summer and the same Ebayer does the Imac one for £45, I will defiantly buy a copy from him.
