Apologies but I'm new to all of this. Can anyone give me some advice on what type of lens to buy for real closeup stuff. I currently own only two lenses - a Canon 18-70mm and a Sigma 70-200mm. What would a decent lens for real closeup images of insects. I am on a limited budget. Would extension tubes work or would I be better going for a specific lens. Any advice appreciated.:)

I think your best bet might be to keep a lookout for a Sigma 105 macro. A tad over £200 should get you a decent copy.
An alternative might be to go for an older macro lens...something like a Canon FD50/100 and an adapter ring....this would require a little more experience to use but you'd bring it in under £100 and the image quality would be comparable.

cheap extension tubes are a good start on a low budget, I have had some success with them, even with a short zoom. But CB's advice is sound if you can afford it.

I bought a series 1 Vivitar 105mm f2.5 last yer for £80. It is a fantastic macro lens, I could probably get £200 for it now

Thanks for the advice evryone. Was thinking about the Sigma 105 as a lot of members used it with amazing results.
