Looking at a macro for my next lens, Iv`e got Canon 18/55 IS kit, a Canon 50mm 1.8 and just purchased a Sigma 17/70 OS HSM macro, but its not a true macro, I`m looking at the Sigma 150 2.8 Macro, would spending the £600 be a justifiable improvement or would ext tubes on my above lenses be as good?:thinking::thinking:
 
The Canon 100mm f2.8 macro gets good reviews, and is cheaper than the Sigma. It's also considerably cheaper than the Canon 100mm f2.8L IS macro!

However, the Sigma 150mm will throw the background more out of focus if you frame the images precisely the same with both lenses and compare.
 
The Sigma 150 is £578 on the WE site.

The Canon 100mm with IS is on at £679

without question I would spend the extra £100 and get the new Canon. I bought it a year ago and it is rarely off my camera. Pin sharp, wonderful bokeh and the IS is a real advantage. If you're sure you need the extra 50mm reach of the Sigma then fair enough but personally the Canon wins hands down for me.

Mind you like most Canon lenses, WE has them on back order. Whether you could get one from other retailers I don't know.
 
why not consider a much cheaper Sigma 105mm f2.8 ( around £400 ish) and use your tubes

Thats what I have and get some nice results :D

I have the Siggy 150mm and I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's widely regarded as being a good lens and the 150mm length and f2.8 mean that you can use it not only for macro but as a general long lens too.

The 150mm is an excellent lens for providing a longer working distance and more diffuse backgrounds, it's an excellent lens for insects (nicknamed the 'bugma').

The shorter lenses will be easier to handhold though. If you don't need working distance, a 100 or 105mm might suit you better.
 
I've recently moved from the 105 to the 150 and find it's more suitable foe me and I also like to use it as a nice long prime outdoors when taking photos of the kids and dogs.

Anybody tried the 180?
