Macro and extension tubes

As a first step into macro using my new D90 I am thinking of getting some extension tubes, as the Nikons are allmost as expensive as a macro lens has any one got other reccomendations or comments about the Kenko range I will use it with the 18-105mm kit lens, 70-300 zoom and also some of my old manual focus AI S lenses. I am new to DSLR photography and current lenses so all advice is welcome particularly on an eventual set up to photograph insects in detail ie which lens to a maximum of say £1000.

Don't use Nikon so can't help with the lens. The Kenko tubes are pretty popular though.

As an aside I saw the Wildlife Photographer on the Year 2009 images yesterday. One of the highly commended macro shots was shot with a 50mm lens reversed onto two full sets of tubes plus a 1.4x convertor  The result was amazing!

Getting started with a set of Kenko tubes (or similar) sounds like a good way.

You have testing ambitions to do justice to insects, for which you will need additional kit and also a lot of experience and knowledge.

One step at a time, but you should also budget for a ring-flash/macro-flash because serious macro is hard without one, and high magnification stuff like insects is almost impossible.

If high magnification macro is where your going, you be better switching to Canon now before you invest into the Nikon system as Nkon only produce 1:1 macro lens.- Canon have a 1-5X macro lens called the MP-e65 which is a stunning macro lens.

As Hoppy say's you need light to get the best from macro above 1:1 the Canon MT24ex or for Nukon the R1 kit.
