Macro attachment lens

I have a Tamron lens which is 18-200 with built in macro, but I don't seem to be able to get in close enough to auto focus in and I constantly have to pull back slightly to be able to auto focus. Would I be better to buy some different macro attachment lens's to screw on.

I have a DCR-250 and have had some great shots. There's a thread on here about it
