I need (want) a macro lens, but Im torn.

The Canon 100mm f/2.8 would do the job fine Im sure, but something is just dragging me towards the 100 f/2.8L IS. I have pretty shakey hands, so the IS would be a benefit, but is it a £500 worth over the other benefit??
Apart from the "red band" factor, what else sets the L lens so far apart. Is there really that much noticeable difference in the IQ?

If anyone has examples I'd like to see. Ive already spent hours on Flickr, but more the merrier.
