I have a tamron 90mm macro lens, would i benefit from buying some extension tubes, i have mainly done insects.

also has anyone used the poloroid auto extension tubes off amazon £60ish, or should i just get the kenko versions

Yeah I've got the polaroid ones. They work fine allowing to use auto focus and aperture.
I believe that using tubes with a macro lens will give greater magnification at the cost of dof
 
The extension tubes will get you to a max of roughly 2:1 magnification, if you want to get tight in on details you can't quite pick out with the lens bare then this could be useful but light, DoF and working distance will become more of an issue so it'll make things a bit harder for you.

DoF will always get thinner as magnification increases, it's unavoidable.
 
thanks bondy, good to here the poloroid tubes are a good alternative

squishy, i was hoping to get some head/compound eye shots, looks like i will have to get some practise in to deal with the dof etc.

This was taken with 48mm Kenko tubes and a Kenko 1.4 DG TC on a Tamron 90mm macro giving about 1:2.5 magnification.

mike, is the 1.4 converter to give more distance from the subject also does it affect the magnification at all?

one last question: what order do you put this on your camera is it tubes then converter followed by lens?

The converter does both. It gives you more working distance for a given magnification, and if the lens alone gives 1:1 magnification, the lens with 1.4 TC will give 1.4:1 at minimum focus distance.

I always fit camera > tubes > converter > lens.
 
Or you could do as I have and get the wife (or someone) to get you the MP-E65 macro lens that gives you up to 5x magnification. Only 3 days til I can use mine and cant wait. Meanwhile a set of tubes will give you a big improvement, With just my Canon 100 f2.8 L macro I can get compound eye shots, but with my Kenko tubes on I can count the dots on its eye. Not tried it with my 1.4x converter on yet, weathers been bad when I'm in and good when I'm out.
