Macro, Full frame or not?

Most of the photos I take are macro or close-up. My main camera body is a Canon EOS 40D. I have been given first refusal on a 5D mk1 at a very good price. So my question is this, would a full frame camera give me any advantage over the crop sensor on my 40D when shooting macro?:thinking:
 
I much preferred my 100mm macro on crop for the longer working distance. FF probably needs more like 160-200mm range.

For everything else I much prefer FF. The noise and colours are visibly better

Working distance dose not alter with sensor size :thinking:

It does if you try to get the same exact composition (i.e. have to move the FF camera in closer). So in practice there is a difference unless you compare minimal focus distance, which will be the same, but the end result different.
 
I use a 5D MarkII for macro, but not because of any advantage of FF for macro. I upgraded from a 50D as I shoot a lot of landscapes. A crop sensor will give greater depth of field and longer working distance so if macro is the primary aim then I'd probably stick with a crop sensor. If you have other reasons for going FF though theres no reason it wont take great macros

Thats just the same for all lens on a FF camera

1:1 macro is only achieved at min focusing distance regardless of sensor size or focal length of the lens, 1:1 on a 60mm produces the same magnification as 1:1 on a 200mm.


I use a MP-e on a 5D2 and the quality and detail is stunning, if you need to compensate for the loss of crop factor just add some tubes.
